Acne Pill – What is it?

Many people know about acne creams and acne care facial washes, which are not only available in any drugstore or even grocery store but are advertised on television in almost every show you watch. Lost of people with acne have thought to themselves “I wish there were a pill to clear this up!” Well, there are. However, they’re not for everyone. They can have serious side effects or interfere with other medications. However, if you are suffering from very acute chronic acne, your doctor may prescribe an acne pill for you. If you’re interested in learning about this type of medicine, you should make an appointment with a dermatologist, who will help you find the medication that’s right for your situation.

Acne Pills and Birth Control

If you are female, do not be surprised if your doctor asks you to take a pregnancy test or start taking birth control pills before giving you a prescription for an acne pill. Most types of acne pills can cause severe birth defects if taken by pregnant women. For this reason, women taking oral acne medications are usually legally required to take at least one form of birth control, and pregnant women are not permitted to be prescribed this sort of medicine at all. If you are pregnant, or are unable to take birth control, your dermatologist will probably be able to recommend an alternative treatment, like a stronger acne cream than the ones in stores.

Acne Pills and Depression

Many types of acne pills have a side effect of depression, so if you have a history of any mental illness, be sure that you have informed your doctor, and consider not taking this type of medication. Those patients who are currently taking antidepressants should probably not take acne pills at the same time, although your doctor will be able to research the possible interactions and instruct you more specifically. If you do not have any history of depression, be aware of it so that you realize it is a possible side effect, and tell your doctor if you seem to be experiencing depression.

Acne Pills – Do They Work?

With all of these warnings, you may be wondering why anyone ever takes acne pills! Well, they can be quite effective in severe acne, and some even continue to work after you stop taking them, sometimes preventing a return of acne forever. If you think acne pills may be for you, talk with your dermatologist today.
