Acne Problems

Although acne is very common, many young teenagers may feel so self-conscious about their acne problem that it affects their daily life. Peers can tease and be cruel, or teens can simply feel as if they stand out in a bad way even when they don’t. The teenage years are a very difficult time in many ways, made harder by the fact that the hormones that are changing their bodies and affecting their moods also quite often cause acne to get worse. The stress of worrying about it only adds to skin problems. Make sure you help your child to know that acne is not his or her fault, and that almost everyone suffers from it at one time or another. Take your son or daughter to the drugstore to choose an acne care cream and face wash, and teach your teen to take proper care of his or her face, washing every night and morning. This may not make the problem go away, but it’s a step in the right direction.

More Serious Acne Problems

In many cases, an acne problem will be severe enough that home remedies and over-the-counter acne creams do not really help. It is especially important for young people that you not give up, but instead seek professional help. While it is very common and even normal to have a few pimples now and then, and a larger breakout during times of increased stress, sometimes you will see an acne problem that is much more serious, appearing almost as a rash on the face or other parts of the body, that lasts for some time. A chronic and serious acne problem like this may require medical care.

Make an appointment for your son or daughter with a dermatologist, who will help to diagnose the problem and determine whether there is another health ailment that may be causing the acne problem. Your teen may have developed allergies to a food, medication, or even just to a facial wash that was supposed to help the skin to get better in the first place. The doctor will also prescribe a stronger type of acne cream than you will be able to buy over the counter in a drugstore, and this may help to make some progress immediately. In very sever chronic acne problems, oral antibiotics or other acne medication may be advised, although these are usually a last resort.
