Acne Vulgaris

Acne Vulgaris sounds like a really scary type of acne, but in fact it is just a fancy Latin name that means “common acne.” And it certainly is common! Almost everyone suffers from it at one time or another in their lives. Many people think it’s just teenagers that have acne problems, but this is not true. While teenagers tend to suffer from Acne Vulgaris more often, even adults and babies have it as well.

Why is Acne Vulgaris a Problem for More Teenagers?

Teenagers seem to have acne more often and more seriously than people of other ages. This is partially because of their hormone levels, which tend to fluctuate quite wildly in the years around and following puberty. These hormones sometimes incorrectly tell the skin cells, especially of the face, to produce too much oil. The pores of the skin can’t use that much for normal use, and become clogged, creating pimples or blackheads.

Acne Vulgaris can also be more of a problem for teens for social reasons. It’s important to realize that it really is a common problem, and not to feel singled out if you have a bad case of acne. You will probably also feel better about it if you take some steps toward clearing it up. There might not be anything you can do about your hormones, but you can do a few things to help with the symptoms.

First, be sure to wash your face. That sounds simple and obvious to some, but many people don’t realize that as they reach puberty, they actually need to wash more often. For acne, washing gently both morning and evening with an acne face wash is very helpful. Second, drink more water so your skin can work on the problem itself from the inside. Your mom has probably told you to stop eating fast foods – well, French fries don’t cause acne, but good nutrition helps your skin, so at least make sure you only eat fried foods as a treat once in a while.

If none of these things seem to help, you might want to see a dermatologist. Severe and chronic Acne Vulgaris can also be due to other health conditions, like allergies or illnesses. A dermatologist will be able to test for all of these. As well, dermatologists have access to a lot of better and stronger creams and medicines, and can probably prescribe you something that’s better suited for your own case of Acne Vulgaris.

If you’re sick and tired of your acne, don’t worry; there’s a solution out there for you.
