Laser Acne Treatment

So many people suffer from the embarrassing symptoms of acne that it’s not too surprising to learn that there are a great many methods of fighting it. For centuries people have tried a variety of home remedies, and in more recent decades there have come to be dozens of types of acne creams made with a variety of chemical ingredients. But modern technology has come up with a more advanced way – laser acne treatment.

Laser Acne Treatment – What is it?

Laser acne treatment, sometimes called “laser resurfacing,” involves the use of a laser to actually remove a thin layer of skin cells from the face, taking away the problems along with it. The skin will grow a brand new surface, which will normally be fine and clear of blemishes. The laser methods may also act on the glands that produce oil, helping them to stop making so much oil that clogs the pores and causes acne in the first place. In this way, laser treatment helps to prevent acne from reoccurring.

Advantages of Laser Acne Treatment

There are other similar treatments that use chemicals or mechanical means to remove this top layer. The laser is much more accurate and safe. Laser acne treatment is usually quite painless. It often leaves the face a bit red and swollen in the first week, but this is normal and temporary. For over ninety percent of patients, this removes or reduces their acne to a large degree.

Laser treatment can also be used to remove acne scarring of some types.

Is Laser Acne Treatment for Everyone?

No, not every case of acne is best treated with laser acne treatment. Types of acne that affect deeper layers of skin are sometimes not able to be cured with laser treatment and are better treated with oral medications. Acne that is due to other health conditions may depend on those health conditions being cured first. And finally, some doctors believe that laser acne treatment should not be used on very dark skin or it may have an unwanted effect of lightening. Laser acne treatment can also be very expensive, and depending on the severity your acne may not be covered under your health insurance, as it is essentially a cosmetic surgery.

Every person’s skin is different, as is every case of acne. Your dermatologist will be able to find the ideal acne treatment for you. Ask if laser acne treatment might be a possibility.
